West Haven Center for the Arts

We seek to transform the former Masonic Temple at 304 Center Street into a grand location that will provide a forum for local, regional, and national artists to display their talents. Our work with other organizations helps us serve West Haven and build a stronger community.

History

For many decades, 304 Center Street was the home of Annawon Masonic Lodge 115, a community organization with roots in West Haven dating back over 140 years. The downtown landmark was built in the early 1900s and was purchased by the City of West Haven in 2007. The columns, pediment, and brick facade have been restored as part of a massive renovation that is still underway.

Restoration

In 2012, the entire exterior of the century-old temple was restored. Efforts were made to both maintain the building's architectural integrity, and to introduce modern efficiency. Windows and doors were replaced, and a new metal roof was installed, complete with skylights and solar panels to harness natural energy. The roof, windows, and doors were done by L&M Construction Company, Kronenberger & Sons Restoration rebuilt the columns that grace the front entrance, and Mercury Solar Systems handled the rooftop solar panels. The interior, designed by Turner Brooks Architects, remains incomplete. There are plans for gallery spaces, a black box theater, and additional renovations to make the building fully accessible to all contributors and audiences.

Funding

The City of West Haven is pursuing grants to complete the major work needed to realize the West Haven Center for the Arts. The temple was purchased with a state grant, and renovations efforts have received assistance from Yale University, the Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism, the State Bond Commission, the Connecticut Main Street Center, the US Department of Energy, the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, and other private sources.
